The search for missing Dunedin man David Palmer will now depend on search and rescue and other volunteers after the official search in the Ahuriri Conservation Park was scaled back as police no longer expect to find him alive.
Constable Nayland Smith, of Omarama, who will co-ordinate any further searches, is organising one this weekend involving Omarama and Twizel search and rescue personnel, family and friends.
Mr Palmer (53), a type 1 diabetic, went missing on May 5 on a three to four-hour tramp to the Dingle Burn track from the upper Ahuriri Valley on the former Birchwood Station.
Omarama SAR volunteers, after meeting Mr Palmer's family and brother, Lenny Palmer, want to continue to look for his body.
