Farm worker killed

A farm worker was killed while riding a four-wheel motorcycle at Ikawai, near Waimate, on Wednesday - the third farm motorcycle fatality in South Canterbury-North Otago in just over a month.

Rakesh Kumar Modi (35), originally from India, was bringing cows to the milking shed on an Elephant Hill Rd property about 1.45pm.

The motorcycle went into a shallow drain area, and either rolled, or tipped, on top of him. He died at the scene, Senior Constable Karen Buchanan said.

Police were investigating the death, which had been referred to the coroner, and the Department of Labour was also investigating.

Precilla Mbatha (39) died on a North Otago dairy farm on November 1.

The four-wheel-motorcycle she was riding rolled and landed on top of her.

Matthew Richardson (10) was killed on a Georgetown dairy farm on October 6.

His two-wheel 80cc motorcycle collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The four-wheel-drive vehicle was being driven by a farm worker.
