About 400 players in 36 teams along with 60 coaches and hundreds of supporters will be at the rugby fun day being held in Kurow today, playing in front of former All Black Christian Cullen.

The event, sponsored by Meridian Energy Ltd as part of its support for North Otago rugby, is the second to be held with all Junior Advisory Board teams' players aged between 5 and 12 years playing in a festival atmosphere at Kurow.

Kurow will also stage the top Citizens Shield rugby clash this weekend between the home team and Valley, with the Kurow versus Valley under 12 years match as the curtain-raiser at 1pm.

North Otago Rugby Union rugby administrator Murray Linwood said games would start at 11am with 17 junior clashes during the day.

Six grounds were being used at the Waitaki Valley School, Kurow racecourse and Kurow Rugby Club.

Former All Black fullback Cullen was the guest for the day and would mingle with players, coaches and supporters.

"It's a huge day for the Kurow club, who are providing a free barbecue for players, referees, ground control and hospitality," he said.

Entertainment included face painting, a bouncy castle and a band.

A film crew from 45 South would be providing footage of the day for the Small Blacks and Grassroots Rugby television programmes.
