A former Hurricanes rugby player has admitted four violence and disorder charges after attacking his wife, being pepper-sprayed and punching a police officer.

Shane Michael Carter (43), of Oamaru, a former Wellington and Hurricanes rugby representative and North Otago coach, appeared in the Oamaru District Court yesterday on charges of obstructing police, resisting arrest, male assaults female and assaulting police, after an incident in October.

The court heard the last year of Carter's marriage had been strained and tension often resulted in heated arguments, including one on the night of October 11.

The next day Carter returned home from work about 6.30pm and threw two remote controllers at the victim, his wife, which she avoided by ducking behind a kitchen island.

He then threw a container of hand sanitiser, which struck her on the left hip.

When Carter saw his wife recording on her cellphone he wrestled it away from her, then picked up the couple's 4-year-old daughter and drove away from the address, before returning about 10 minutes later.

The victim, who was recording the incident at the time, locked the house and asked Carter to leave her phone and daughter on the porch and leave.

He then entered the property through the laundry.

By that stage the woman had locked herself in a bathroom with the defendant's phone.

Carter unlocked the bathroom door and took his phone from the victim, as well as an iPad, which he smashed.

She was locked outside by Carter, who then placed the smashed items into a shopping bag.

When police arrived, he refused to speak to them.

An officer advised Mr Carter the bag was to be searched and when he refused to co-operate, the officer warned him he was obstructing police.

Mr Carter continued to refuse and was threatened with arrest, before walking away.

He was told he was under arrest, but refused to be handcuffed.

When he was warned for resisting police, Carter said, ''I will bloody resist,'' before he pulled away from the arresting officer and pushed past another.

Carter entered the house before one of the two officers at the scene pointed a Taser at him and issued a warning.

He stepped towards the officer saying, ''Taser me.''

The other officer pepper-sprayed him, which had minimal impact.

A third officer arrived at the scene, grabbed Carter by his arm and attempted to handcuff him.

During a struggle he landed on one of the officers and punched him twice.

The victim's left thumb and right shoulder were injured in the incident, while one officer received a small cut to his chin and another a fat bottom lip.

Explaining his actions, Carter said he was sorry and was not thinking properly at the time.

He was remanded on bail by Judge Joanna Maze to reappear for sentencing on December 6. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
