Weston School near Oamaru might look a little different to Joan Martin these days, but one thing remains the same - the willingness of pupils to learn.

She was one of about 180 former pupils, staff and others associated with the school at its 150th jubilee, which started on Friday and wrapped up on Sunday.

Mrs Martin, who attended the school between 1935 and 1941 and still lives in Oamaru, said she had fond memories of her time both in and outside the classroom.

''They are wonderful memories. There was only two rooms and a play shed. You were either in the big room or the little room. There was only about 50 pupils at the school, so you knew everyone.''

She said her teachers were ''lovely people'' who inspired pupils.

''You wanted to learn and just enjoyed it.''

Alongside current pupil Hugh Newton, Mrs Martin cut a cake, fashioned to resemble the school grounds, to mark the occasion.

Principal Deidre Senior said the school was important to many.

''It does not take long to pick up what this school means to the community and likewise, what the community means to the school.''

Before group photographs and tours of the school on Saturday, those who attended were piped into the school grounds by members of the Waitaki District Schools Pipe Band from the nearby Weston Community Hall, which was followed by a haka performed by pupils, and speeches.

Mrs Senior addressed those gathered and talked about the school's infrastructure, its sports, cultural and environmental endeavours, how it used technology in the classroom, staff and pupils.

''They are very proud to be here and likewise we are proud to have them,'' she said.
