Free safety courses for older drivers

Older drivers in the Waitaki district are being offered free road-safety refresher courses to help build their confidence on the road.

The courses of three sessions, limited to 20 people, will also cover safe driving practices, changes to the road code and other transport options, Waitaki community safety officer Helen Algar said.

"For many older people driving is a key to their independence, and many seniors rely on their car to get around for shopping, appointments or visiting friends and family," she said.

The courses were part of the Waitaki District Council road safety programmes.

Starting today at the Oamaru Plunket Rooms in Severn St, the courses include a free practical driving option as well as a mobility scooter workshop.
