A dilapidated Oamaru building, which its owners plan to turn into visitor accommodation, has been approved for Heritage Earthquake Upgrade Incentive Programme funding.

The  Marshall Building on Tees St was one of three heritage buildings in New Zealand named this week for  Heritage Earthquake  funding.  Owner Katrina Menzies, of Christchurch, said she was "thrilled" to receive $48,000 towards the work and "excited about bringing a dilapidated building back to life amidst what seems to be a town springing to life again".

Prime Minister and Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Jacinda Ardern, who administers the fund, called Oamaru "a phenomenal example" of a community that had embraced its heritage buildings.

"To see one of these buildings have a future role accommodating visitors and further showcasing Oamaru is fantastic."
