Man arrested after gun incident

An armed man was arrested in Warrington on Friday night following an incident  in Oamaru earlier in the evening.

The 57-year-old Christchurch man was  charged with presenting a firearm at a person and unlawful possession of a firearm after allegedly pointing a gun at a motorist in Oamaru on Friday night.

A police spokeswoman said the man pointed the gun at the other driver in response to a driving complaint.The armed offenders squad was notified of the incident, which occurred about 9pm.

Police tracked the offender’s vehicle south on State Highway 1, towards Dunedin.After making inquiries about the incident several kilometres north of Dunedin, the man was arrested in Warrington late on Friday night.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday and was  remanded on bail to reappear  on January 30.

"As the matter is before the courts, I don’t have any further details I can provide," she said.
