Heavy vehicles may still be allowed to park in residential areas of the Waitaki district, despite a request to the Waitaki District Council to ban them.
The issue arose last year when the council was considering submissions on its roading bylaw, but has been rejected in a staff report for tomorrow's assets committee meeting.
Roading manager Michael Voss said a ban could cause inconsistencies within the roading network and increase financial costs because of administration and additional signage.
Last year Oamaru resident Bruce Comfort pointed out there were no controls in the draft roading bylaw on heavy vehicles parking in residential areas.
In particular, he was critical of large trucks with side curtains that had colourful or intrusive advertising being parked outside houses and affecting residents' views.
A Salisbury Cres, Oamaru, resident had also complained. In total, five complaints had been received since records started in 2011.
While staff pointed out issues with introducing the ban, councillors asked for a report on a draft policy for heavy vehicle parking in residential areas.
That report request has resulted in a recommendation to tomorrow's's committee meeting that heavy vehicle parking remains a permitted activity in residential areas.
Mr Voss said the status quo was the preferred option.
''Complaints about heavy vehicle parking will be investigated by officers on a case-by-case basis within existing bylaws and legislation,'' he said.
There were also issues with heavy vehicles being parked outside their owners' residences during the night, especially in smaller townships.
