Help sought for pavilion

North Otago Hockey will soon have its own building at its artificial turf at Centennial Park, but needs $20,000 from the Waitaki District Council to complete it.

The North Otago Recreation Turf Trust has already raised about $300,000 for the project, which includes a $251,000 grant from the Lottery Grants Board but not an estimated $30,000 in materials from businesses or more than 400 hours in voluntary labour.

The council's community services committee has been asked for help to complete the project, and staff have recommended a grant of $20,000 be made from resource management contribution funds.

It will consider that at its meeting on Wednesday.

Trust chairman Ray Simpson said it was felt it had exhausted the generosity of local businesses, making it impossible to finish without council help.

Apart from providing facilities for hockey, the pavilion would also have one set of toilets for users of the outside fields at Centennial Park surrounding the turf, including rugby and softball.

The pavilion has changing facilities, a viewing area, kitchen and toilets is progressing well, as work continued earlier this week in dismal conditions.

It is expected to be finished in about three weeks.

The trust built the artificial turf about 18 years ago and, since then, has shared facilities with a neighbouring sports club, as well as using public toilets across the road on the main grounds at the park.

In 2013, the council agreed to lease part of the park at the eastern end of the turf for a pavilion which, hockey said, was badly needed to continue to attract major tournaments to Oamaru.

The pavilion will also be available for other organisations to rent.
