The inaugural open day attracted a good crowd on Saturday afternoon and was held to launch the new gliding season. A wine and cheese evening on Saturday night completed the day.
Mr Clarkson was one of a group of enthusiastic owners of model radio-controlled planes which took part in flying demonstrations. His Great Planes Revolver is worth about $1000, with another $1000 for the radio transmitter to control it.
It is one of about a dozen model planes he owns. The open day started with a demonstration by the Omarama Fire Brigade and its first response unit. Other displays included the radio-controlled planes, a winching glider launch demonstration, glider flights and aerobatics, a take-off and landing competition and a Piper Cub demonstration. Scenic glider and planes flights at special prices were also available.
