MP to meet group over rates hike

Representatives of the Gemmells Crossing camp will meet Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean next week to discuss its proposed increase in rates from $1621 to $14,552.

The increase is a result of the Waitaki District Council's proposed change to the way the uniform annual charge will be levied on properties.

Last week, deputy mayor Gary Kircher said it was about fairness.

Yesterday, camp committee president Colin Ballantyne said the issue was discussed at a committee meeting during the weekend.

People were feeling "a little bit frustrated and annoyed" and they were disappointed at the lack of consultation, he said.

The camp committee would be making a submission to the council's draft community plan on the issue.

Mr Ballantyne said he would also post submission forms to 26 owners of cribs at the camp.
