Moeraki is to get a new walkway in a project put together by the Moeraki Ratepayers' Association and the Waihemo Community Board.
The town's amenity rate will pay for the walkway and associated signage, and better lighting at the public toilet, all expected to cost about $13,000. The Moeraki amenity fund now stands at about $15,000.
The amenity rate is paid by ratepayers in townships throughout the district. It is used for special projects in their towns.
The council's roading engineer, Kushla Morgan, said the community board and association had met to investigate options for a safe walkway from the motel on Haven St to the wharf. Other improvements were also identified.
One option for the walkway was along the sea side of Haven St, the other on the hill side of the street. Both had similar estimated costs.
Due to potential issues with property boundaries, the sea side option was chosen.
Extra lighting around the public toilets would improve safety at night and light the existing path.
The new walkway signs would point to two existing walkways along the coast.
