Oamaru 'Great Storm' blows back

Auditions will be held in September for Oamaru's live history show The Great Storm of 1868.

The show premiered in the town's historic precinct last November, with three cast members taking on multiple roles to re-enact a shipwreck and flood that ravaged the town 140 years ago. It will run again this summer season.

This week, producer Scott Elliffe also announced the commissioning of a special one-person show which would offer something new for locals who had supported the The Great Storm of 1868 with their "heart and soul" in its first season.

It would follow a similar format but would tell a new story.

There was potential for it to be taken to other towns as well, he said.

Mr Elliffe said there had been some "really encouraging discussions" with tour operators and cruise operators with a view to day trips to Oamaru.

"We're continuing to push really hard trying to develop those markets," he said.
