If you ask Margaret Kyle, life is a lot like golf.

And turning 100 is a lot like getting a hole-in-one.

"A hole-in-one is what everyone aspires to," she said.

"But the thing with a hole-in-one is, you’ve got to hit the length for it to go in the hole, you’ve got to hit it a bit straight and then it’s in the lap of the gods.

"I’ve seen lots of people miss a hole-in-one by [not] much."

For Mrs Kyle, last Saturday was her hole-in-one, as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

On Friday, she met women from Lower Waitaki Golf Club for lunch at the Oamaru Club and welcomed two more friends the following day, to mark the occasion.

Rounding out the celebrations, a family function was held on Sunday.

Mrs Kyle grew up in Millerton on the West Coast and has been in Oamaru "50-odd years".

She married her husband Des in 1947 in Westport. He died 18 years ago.

Together, they had two children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs Kyle was a teacher and taught in Invercargill, Westport and at the now closed Casa Nova Primary School in Oamaru.

Margaret and Des joined the Lower Waitaki Golf Club when it was formed in 1976.

"I played it until I was over 90," she said.
