Fire razed an abandoned house yesterday after wind fanned flames from a nearby pile of burning logs.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said Fenz was called about 12.40pm and responded with crews from the Waikouaiti, Palmerston, Waitati and Hampden stations.

The wooden and unoccupied home on State Highway 1 was at Goodwood, south of Palmerston.

The fire was well-involved but firefighters had the blaze contained within an hour.

Crews then worked to remove roofing iron and dampen down any hotspots.

A firefighter on site said the blaze started from a pile of logs being burnt nearby and the wind fanned the flames to the abandoned building.

The structure was more than 100 years old and was well known to people in the area, the firefighter said.
