Omarama on alert after deluge

The central South Island town of Omarama is on alert after a deluge this morning.

Omarama Holiday park owner Arda Booiman said heavy rain that started about 9am this morning was easing at 11.20am and the sky was brightening.

"I suppose we have to just wait and see what comes down from the headwaters later on, but the river is looking all right at the moment."

Heavy rain warnings were issued for Otago headwaters last night, with up to 60mm expected between 8.30am and midday.
