Police officer's attackers bailed

The three men who appeared in the Oamaru District Court today in relation to last night's attack on a police officer in the town have been bailed until March 3.

The 20-year-old Oamaru man who appeared on charges of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, excess breath alcohol, failing to accompany a police officer, resisting arrest and aggravated injuring has name suppression.

The police officer involved has name suppression.

An 18-year-old Oamaru man faced a charge of aggravated injuring.

Another 18-year-old Oamaru man faced a charge of theft of a breath testing device taken during the assault on the officer. It is yet to be recovered.

Two other people have assisted police with their inquiries.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said the officer, who suffered facial, leg and arm injuries, was progressing well and was released from hospital today.

"This was an unprovoked attack. In a community like Oamaru, this incident is very unusual and has a big impact," Snr Sgt McCoy said.
