"Let's party," was Oamaru Club president Russell Pope's message to about 250 people on Saturday night at the official opening to celebrate a $2.1 million refurbishment.

The first major redevelopment since the club, located between Severn and Reed Sts, opened in 1961, the two major bars have been completely refurbished to provide a modern atmosphere, including 11 big-screen televisions along the walls to broadcast sport and racing events.

It also includes a new, separate pool and billiards room as well as other facilities.

Club president Russell Pope said the "very loyal" 2700 members had supported the redevelopment, which was also aimed at attracting new members, particularly younger people.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean officially opened the redevelopment at the new entrance by cutting a ribbon held by two life members, Doug Harwood and Brent Hobbs. Official guests included Waitaki Mayor and Mayoress, Alex and Heather Familton, and vice-president of Clubs NZ, Caroline Kellaway, of Christchurch.

Mrs Kellaway said the club had shown great foresight with the redevelopment, determined not to stay in the past but bring the club into the future.

"With good policies, good management and good support, the club will be here for a long time," she said.

Mr Familton said the club had a 50-year history and would be a part of the community's structure and fabric in the future.
