Road spikes used to stop car

Road spikes were used to stop an allegedly stolen vehicle north of Oamaru on Monday.

Two males, a 16-year-old youth who was driving and a 15-year-old passenger, both of Blenheim, were arrested and charged by Oamaru police in relation to the incident in State Highway 1.

A police spokeswoman said the pair had planned to travel from Blenheim to Dunedin before Waimate police caught up with the vehicle about noon.

However, a short, high-speed pursuit was quickly abandoned when the vehicle was clocked at more than 150kmh.

The vehicle also passed on yellow lines several times, and at one point forced a northbound vehicle off the road, the spokeswoman said.

Oamaru police placed road spikes on the highway at Hilderthorpe, north of Oamaru, about 12.30pm.

The vehicle was stopped and police arrested the youths, who it is alleged were also involved in an earlier petrol drive-off in Washdyke.

The 16-year-old was charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, theft, failing to stop and dangerous driving, and the 15-year-old with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Both were scheduled to appear in the Timaru District Court yesterday.
