Yesterday, long-time local resident Sheryl Leaman said the damage, where there had been no protection work, was "just horrendous" and she believed it was through "sheer neglect".
Mrs Leaman, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, said she had "never seen anything" like it.
She had notified the Waitaki District Council, but said nothing had happened.
She believed the council was not aware of how bad the situation was.
Temporary work, until a decision was made on the future of the road, could have minimised damage.
Where work had been done, it had been successful, she said.
A subcommittee comprising Crs Alistair Mavor and Pam Spite was tasked last month with inspecting the damage and coming up with long-term solutions after consulting residents in the area.
Options ranged from shifting roads further inland to the long-term possibility of closing Beach Rd between Oamaru and Thousand Acre Rd.
The road is temporarily closed between Gardners Rd and Thousand Acre Rd.
The Leaman family had not yet been contacted by the subcommittee to discuss the issue, she said.
When contacted yesterday, Cr Mavor said what to do with the road was a "real dilemma".
It was a case of funding and the council could not rush in and spend money.
A temporary fix would not work.
Independently of this problem, the council is grappling with coastal erosion issues between Oamaru and the Waianakarua River.
