Springston Trophy gearing up

More than 500 riders and their support crews will arrive in Oamaru next week to contest one of New Zealand's biggest horse-riding events, the Springston Trophy.

Contested among South Island pony clubs, this is the first time Oamaru has hosted the event in 15 years. It has taken a year to plan, and up to 40 judges and officials will be here for the duration.

''We are hugely excited for the opportunity to hold this event on our own turf,'' event secretary Jane Simpson said yesterday.

The North Otago Pony Club was awarded the event, which will be at the Oamaru racecourse from October 4 to 6.

Mrs Simpson said there would be 29 teams, each with six riders. She estimated each team would bring about 12 grooms, parents, managers and coaches.

Each team was responsible for organising its own accommodation and meals. Most were using private grazing for the horses, although some had opted to stable them at the racecourse.

Teams were expected to start arriving on Wednesday, October 2, to prepare for the event, with dressage on the Friday, cross-country on Saturday, showjumping and prize-giving on Sunday.

People were encouraged to go out and watch the event, which includes horses and riders tackling an impressive water feature jump.

The expense of running the event has been reduced by a $10,000 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust to help cover meeting safety standards, including on-site veterinary services and St John medical assistance.

It would also cover other expenses, including hire of the racecourse, sound equipment, show jumps and accommodation for volunteer officials.

In April last year, the North Otago club hosted the New Zealand Pony Clubs' championship at the same venue.
