Tougher line on rubbish

The Waitaki District Council wants to get tough on people who dump both domestic and business rubbish in council litter bins.

However, before that, it wants to hear what the public thinks.

It is asking for public submissions on a draft solid waste bylaw which proposes to ban dumping domestic waste in council litter bins.

The bylaw will also establish kerbside collections by private contractors.

The council's solid waste officer, Gerry O'Neill, said it was unfair a small number of people were using public litter bins to dispose of domestic or business waste.

The proposed bylaw would allow the council to prosecute offenders through the court system.

The proposed bylaw also made it an offence for waste placed at kerbsides to cause nuisance.

Submissions close on October 29 and the council will hold public hearings on November 10.

The full proposal and draft bylaw can be viewed on the council website, its Oamaru office or district libraries.
