The Waitaki district now has 14 licensed regional tourism ambassadors. The group, presented with their ambassador badges yesterday by Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton, completed a new, six-week course at Aoraki Polytechnic's Oamaru campus.

Those participating came from a wide range of backgrounds, including hospitality and tourism industries, while others were looking for a change of job, campus manager Irene Sparks said.

The course, tutored by Stefanie Backhouse-Rudolph, had proved very successful and it was hoped to run it four times a year.

There had already been good interest from moteliers, backpacker owners, retailers and the public.

Mrs Sparks hoped it had given the participants a broad idea of what the region had to offer, from Macraes to Omarama, and they would be able to promote the area with pride and enthusiasm.

As well as visiting tourist attractions, there were also discussions about tourism, marketing and customer service and the tourism forecast for the area.
