Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher holds two designs for a proposed mural on the Countdown supermarket wall in Oamaru.

Mr Kircher awaits approval from Countdown before authorising a mural on the supermarket's Thames Highway wall.

He said options for transforming the supermarket's large, white wall with a mural were investigated after pressure from the public on social media about 10 months ago.

The murals have been designed by local artists Watts Davies, Trish Shirley and Donna Demente, the project has been co-ordinated by Ken Laraman and will capture a panorama of Oamaru and Waitaki district scenes in 11 panels.

If Countdown gives approval, the panels will be enlarged on to vinyl and applied to the wall, and given an anti-graffiti coating.

Mr Kircher hoped to get a response from Countdown in the next week.
