Water allocation increase

More water will be able to be taken from North Otago's volcanic aquifer as a result of a recently adopted plan-change proposal.

The Otago Regional Council will publicly notify the proposed changes to its water plan next Saturday.

The process started with public workshops in Kakanui, followed by the release of a draft plan change in September last year.

Submissions were presented at a hearing in June.

Hearing chairman Cr Duncan Butcher said he hoped the alterations the committee made to the draft "will satisfy all submitters".

Council chairman Stephen Woodhead said additional information showing the water in the aquifer was greater than initially thought had meant the panel was able to approve a maximum allocation of 7cu m, up from 5cu m.

Those who made submissions on the changes had the opportunity to appeal the decision to the Environment Court within 30 working days.
