A suggestion the liquor ban in the Oamaru Harbour area should be eased has prompted the local Students Against Driving Drunk (Sadd) organisation to speak out in opposition.

People are being urged to have their say during a review of the Waitaki District Council's liquor ban bylaw. public submissions closing next week.

In particular, Cr Peter Garvan wanted to hear the public's views on easing the total ban on the consumption of liquor in the harbourside area.

Sadd chairwoman Lana Ennis said the group did not want to see that happen as members believed the ban "works really well" and removing it would encourage bad behaviour around the harbour area.

"Removing the liquor ban is just silly," Ms Ennis said.

The group believed community members and tourists would be put off and affected by any bad behaviour that could result from people drinking in the area.

They were also concerned about the risk of people drinking and driving if they were allowed to picnic in the area with alcohol.

Ms Ennis was one of the young people involved in surveying residents in the area where the council was proposing to extend the permanent liquor ban area.

She was amazed at what some of the elderly community told them about the damage, litter and vandalism they had experienced due to people drinking in their neighbourhood.

The group felt so strongly about the issue that it has written a submission in support of the council's proposal to extend the permanent liquor ban area into other parts of downtown Oamaru, and in support of keeping the ban in the harbour area.
