Otago's variety of earth and natural building structures has impressed visitors from around New Zealand.
The Earth Building Conference and Tours has been held this weekend at Orokonui.
About 40 earth and natural building enthusiasts have been touring North Dunedin and Central Otago for examples of the building techniques.
They have also been learning about applications and methods.
Auckland University engineering PhD student John Cheah said there was a great variety of natural structures to be seen in Otago, including earth brick and earth plaster and render buildings, both historical and modern.
The annual conference, which was held in different places around the country, gave enthusiasts an opportunity to look at different examples and network.
A mixture of people attended, from those curious about earth building to those experienced.
"There is an amazing wealth of experience here in building, which is very valuable," Mr Cheah said.
Mr Cheah presented some of his PhD work on flax fibre-reinforced rammed earth buildings.
"It's been very valuable. It's a great place to learn," Mr Cheah said. rebecca.fox@odt.co.nz
