‘Desire of everyone’ to cut costs

Cost-dutting by the Queenstown Lakes District Council will not stop with the departure of former chief executive Adam Feeley.

That was Mayor Vanessa van Uden's response to an Otago Daily Times article on Monday she thought had implied otherwise.

She also took umbrage at the article's reference to the council's ‘‘mothballing'' of its controversial $61.8 million conference centre proposal.

Speaking at a special council meeting in the resort yesterday, Ms van Uden said she disliked the article's implication that cost-cutting by the council in the past few years had been solely driven by Mr Feeley.

‘‘Actually it has been the function and desire of everyone at this table to cut costs and increase efficiencies, and I don't believe that has changed in any way, shape or form.''

As for the convention centre, the council's annual plan consultation document stated the project was not being brought forward because there was no funding currently available, she said.

‘‘‘Mothballed' is a bit of a stretch to take.''

Mr Feeley quit in November.
