'All go' at Coronet Peak

Chairlifts at Coronet Peak would start to turn at 9am tomorrow for the 2010 season, ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said yesterday.

There had been doubt whether the skifield would be able to open as planned this week, because of some thin areas of snow on parts of the M1, but four hours of snow-making overnight on Wednesday had allowed NZSki to make the decision to go ahead, Mr McCrostie said.

However, there would be limited skiing and riding on parts of the lower mountain.

"We are going to open.

"It's all go.

"We will open with the Coronet Express Quad and the brand new Meadows Express Quad providing access to the M1, Million Dollar, Wall Street, Shirtfront and Big Easy trails."

The Magic Carpet and beginners area would also be operating. However, people needed to know snow cover on the lower mountain was thin.

Mr McCrostie said the upper mountain would offer some good skiing and riding on trails, with some off piste access as well.
