Parishioners are "very happy, very relieved" that consent has been granted for the construction of a $1.4 million community hall next to Arrowtown's historic St John's Presbyterian Church.

The next step will be for the Arrowtown Trust to gain approval to move the adjacent 138-year-old former Millers Flat church to a site behind Adams Cottage, on Buckingham St, to make way for the development.

The Otago Foundation Trust Board was last week given approval to build the new hall, restore the church building and convert the existing vestry from a hall to a church office, along with works involved in construction.

Building committee chairman Bruce Patton said there would be 12 gravel car parking bays on road reserve, with a footpath along Durham St.

There was provision to establish another six community car parks on Queenstown Lakes District Council reserve if needed, but commissioners "were happy Arrowtown has the ability to absorb parking on grass verges as it has in the past".

The existing holly hedge on Berkshire and Durham Sts was to be "protected in perpetuity" and retained at the existing trimmed heights, the consent conditions stated.

The hall will have cream-coloured walls, windows and doors, a dark blue roof with a low-gloss paint finish, dark blue fascias and mid-blue trim.

All doors and windows will have a timber sash with frames.

Mr Patton said there had never been any plans to remove the holly hedge, as it was an attractive feature at the entrance to Arrowtown and served as a screen, providing a degree of privacy to the hall.

He said the proposal had taken 13 months to gain resource consent. The appeal period on the decision by commissioners Andrew Henderson and Christine Kelly is open until September 22, but Mr Patton said "it would be surprising for something to come out of that".
