The stalwart men of the Arrowtown Bulls are gearing up for the toughest rugby match of the season and their biggest challenge since last year - retaining their Otago Countrywide Premier title against Lawrence.

Having won the title for the first time in 2008, there is plenty for the Bulls to play for tomorrow as they host the men from Lawrence at their home ground, Jack Reid Park in Arrowtown.

As well as the matter of pride in retaining the title for a second year, Arrowtown coach Blair Wilce said with key team members Jim O'Malley and Nathan Pullar stepping down after the game, the team wanted to give them a solid win to end their careers.

"They have been a couple of great players and a huge part of the team's success over the season," Wilce said.

The Bulls also have their fiercely guarded "unbeatable at home" reputation - something of which Lawrence president Stuart Cotton is wary.

While the Lawrence premier team had an unbeaten season in the southern region championship, he was guarded in his reply when asked how he rated his team"We are well aware we are going to Arrowtown and playing them on their home ground," Cotton said.

"The team is fairly well prepared for it [the game] . . . but had mixed success [in the urban competition against Dunedin teams]."

However, he promised an "entertaining match" from a Lawrence team which has strength in the back row and "some speed" on the wings.

Arrowtown president Simon Spark said the team had had "a season of two halves" but was confident the 2009 team was not finished yet.

"I've got every faith in their ability," he said.

"The White Horse Cup - eight challenges - has taken its toll, but the team has hung in there and created a bit of history, which is what rugby is all about.

"This is a chance to create a bit more."

Arrowtown plays Lawrence for the Otago PGG Wrightson Countrywide Premier title at Jack Reid Park, Arrowtown, tomorrow.

Kick-off is at 2.45pm.
