Queenstown police are appealing for information about three men who boarded the TSS Earnslaw early on Sunday.
Constable Sean Drader said the three men boarded Real Journey's historic steamship at 1.47am.
An alarm was activated, which scared off the trio, but about half an hour later one of the men returned and stole an orange life preserver ring, according to police.
"They are a pretty distinctive trio. Real Journeys have become worried about people going on their ... boat," Const Drader said.
The boat's security camera captured footage of the men, which police released in the hope of catching the offenders.
