Completion of the McChesney Bridge upgrade is on track and dependent on the the ski season ending.
Capital works manager Ken Gousmett told Queenstown Lakes District councillors at yesterday's infrastructure services committee meeting NZSki had given a tentative closing date of October 7.
Mr Gousmett said despite rumours to the contrary, the widening of the one-lane bridge was on track and by the end of October he expected motorists would be able to return to the 70km limit.
He said by allowing motorists to use the bridge while upgrading work continued the council had saved nearly $600,000.
"Yes, it has taken longer than maybe if we had a separate bridge ... but we have always said that we will finish the major work on the bridge by July, which we have done."
