Business too mellow for Yello

Two weeks after starting Wanaka's first public transport service, cab company Yello has put the service on hold.

Yello operator Al Baxter said yesterday the night-time service around the town had not been as well supported as it needed to be for it to be viable.

"We were told by a whole lot of people that they would support it ... It was not very well supported at all. Maybe it's got something to do with early in the season, cold at nights; I really don't know."

An approach had been made to the Otago Regional Council and Queenstown Lakes District Councils for "some funding" to continue the trial.

Mr Baxter said that would be a "long process", but there had been a "very good" response from the two councils to the idea for the service.

Mr Baxter said the company was still investigating a "workers' bus" between Hawea and Wanaka for mornings and nights.

"That's still on the drawing board."

Mr Baxter said in the meantime, the company was "run off its feet" providing transport to the skifields.
