The council started the process of finding a replacement for Debra Lawson who announced last week her decision not to seek reappointment for a second term after two and a-half years in the role.
Ms Lawson's last day with the authority will be June 30.
Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden said work was being done to update the position description.
"This process will help to inform the key criteria which are being sought in the ideal candidate.
"It is intended to advertise the position within the next two weeks, as in the week following Queen's Birthday."
Advertising will be nationwide.
The council engaged human resources consultancy Martin Jenkins to help with recruitment.
The Auckland and Wellington-based firm will provide initial screenings and assessments of applications received.
Ms van Uden said the council would select the candidates for interview.
A panel involving the mayor and all councillors would interview the shortlisted candidates.
The final appointment would be "an all of council decision", she said.
