A 53-year-old transient man is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court after hundreds of objectionable images of children were allegedly found on his computer.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said yesterday the man, who was known to police, was believed to have lived in Wanaka until recently.
The man was arrested in relation to his alleged possession of a laptop computer containing objectionable images of minors.
The computer was left behind at a Queenstown address where the man had been staying. The householder switched on the laptop to identify its owner, discovered the alleged pornography and reported the matter to the police.
The images were from an unknown country of origin, but Queenstown detectives were making further inquiries, Snr Const Blackford said.
The man was arrested and charged with possession of objectionable material.
More charges may follow.
The man was arrested in Wanaka and was scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court on June 17, Snr Const Blackford said.
