Round New Zealand walker Chris Linton (52) and his "monowalker fatmate'' took a break in Wanaka this week after 41 days' walking from Picton, down the West Coast.

Mr Linton, who is due in Queenstown tomorrow, said he was testing the prototype monowalker, carrying 60kg of gear around the North, South, Stewart and Chatham Islands - a distance he estimates to be more than 6500km - in 11 months.

He will, however, cross the Crown Range at night and without the monowalker, because of his concerns about other traffic using the route during the day.

Mr Linton, who calls himself The Earth Walk Man, has previously walked around Tasmania, and is raising awareness about depression and bipolar disorder.
