Claim barking dog complaints overstated

Barking dogs are increasingly driving some Upper Clutha residents barking mad, says a Wanaka constable.

However, the number of complaints about cacophonous canines does not quite match police claims, a council regulatory manager says.

Senior Constable Ian Henderson told Radio Wanaka this week there had been an increase in the number of complaints made to police about barking dogs.

Lakes Environmental compliance manager Lee Webster, of Queenstown, said barking dogs accounted for a "very small" proportion of noise complaints.

About 17 complaints had been made to Lakes Environmental about noisy dogs, he said.

Dog control officers visited animal owners if a complaint was made and sometimes gave advice on how to ensure their dogs did not bark too much, Mr Webster said.

The enforcement officers had written three letters to animal owners to follow up on initial complaints during the past 11 months, he said.

Wanaka sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said there was the "odd neighbourly dispute" about barking dogs, but it was "certainly not" a common occurrence.
