Capturing in a single photograph the reason Queenstown is a great place to live is no easy feat, but that is exactly what the Queenstown Lakes District Council has asked school pupils of the district to do.

The QLDC has launched a photo competition open to all children in the district, from preschool to high school. The photos will be used to illustrate the council's 10-year-plan in the three volumes planned to be published in April 2012.

The last long-term plan was adopted in 2009 and featured photographs taken by senior members of the community, but the council has handed the job to the district's children.

QLDC communications officer Meaghan Miller said the council wanted to receive photographs which celebrated the people and places the children enjoyed in the district.

The photos would also go on display in Queenstown and Wanaka during the plan's consultation period in April.

"We will be selecting some 20-30 shots from those sent in to feature in the three volumes of the plan including the front covers, so it will be very exciting for the children and generate some interest in the 10-Year-Plan process in our younger residents," Ms Miller said.

She said entries by "anyone who can hold a camera" would be considered and she hoped the children would take up the challenge.

"It's a great project for the start of the school holidays. There is a whole month for young people to get creative. We'd love to see images come in from all corners of our district," Ms Miller said.

There were no hard and fast rules about the competition and photos would be accepted in most formats.

QLDC Mayor Vanessa van Uden will select the single best illustration that represented "what's great about where we live" and the winner of the Our People Our Place competition will receive a digital camera.
