A good place to start would be Wanaka's Mount Aspiring College, where six pupils have made different Otago representative teams this year.
Flanker Nic Haldezos (15) made the Otago under-16 age group team, while lock Josh Dickson (13) was selected for the under-14 age group team.
First five-eighth Alex Knight (12) and blindside flanker Brendon Murdoch (12) have carried their Mount Aspiring College combination on to the field for the Otago Under 65kg team, while winger Bradley Hewson (13) and centre George Gilchrist (13) will renew their outside pairing for the Otago Under 48kg side.
Two Dunedin-based rugby players who are formerly from the Upper Clutha have also been selected for the province. Former Mount Aspiring College pupil and Upper Clutha Under-18 star Tim Ferguson is now locking for the Otago Under-18 team, and Josh Renton, who boards in Dunedin, was selected this year to play for the Otago Under-14 team as a halfback.
The players from Mount Aspiring College have clocked up many kilometres travelling to and from Dunedin to train and represent Otago, with some of even choosing to attend school in the city to cut down on travel costs.
Considering several big name All Blacks, such as captain Richie McCaw (Kurow, Otago) and Dan Carter (Leeston, Canterbury) hark from small-town roots, the young Wanaka-based players could be hoping to pull on more than just the famous blue and gold jersey in the future.
