Driving crackdown

Police will be cracking down on driving speed this Labour Weekend.

Drivers will need to stay within 4km of the permanent posted speed limit, as police will be enforcing on the lower speeding tolerance level.

Police will also be keeping a close eye on general driving behaviour, ensuring people drive safely and within the law.

Senior Sergeant John Fookes of the Queenstown Police said preparation for the long weekend and Rugby World Cup final has been standard and they were not expecting anything out of the ordinary.

"Often the quietest time is when the games are on, but it could be a different story afterwards."

Southern District's Acting Road Policing Manager, Inspector Steve Larking, said reducing the speed limit is necessary to keeping the road toll down during the public holiday.

"Speed is the number one factor in road crashes. If we reduce our driving speed then we can have a big impact on the number of crashes, fatalities and people injured on our roads."

Last year during Labour Weekend two people were killed on Southern roads and another five were seriously injured.
