But, again, Streep the actress disappears, and we are soon feeling ever so bad for Kay and her attempts to rekindle the physical spark that died out somewhere along her 30-year marriage.
Out of desperation, Kay books a week-long intensive couples' therapy course in the town of Hope Springs with Dr Feld (Carell) and you'll be rooting for Kay and Arnold too (figuratively speaking) as they learn all over again how to talk to each other, touch each other, and - well, I can't say what, but a scene in a dark movie theatre is worth the price of admission, if only to see the look on Arnold's face.
Carell is superb, dialling down the comedian to show a more serious side, and he is fast becoming one of my favourite actors, but Streep and Jones are magnificent together.
I felt a bit awkward for them as they tried to get more in touch with their sexy sides, but after many dark, brooding blockbusters, this was a breath of fresh air and I laughed out loud a few times.
