More than 80 Wakatipu children aged 5 to 12 and their families took part in the fifth annual Kids Fishing Day, hosted by the Fiordland Fishing Club South, at Jack's Point, on Sunday.
It was the first time the event had been held at the tranquil waters of Lake Tewa, instead of the waterfront of Lake Wakatipu. The venue was chosen due to the day's growing popularity, the lake's ease of access and its good odds of a catch or two.
Fish and Game Otago deposited brown and rainbow trout in Lake Tewa last winter and dropped in a 300 more from the hatchery at the Macraes's Flat Gold mine last week.
Young fishers were allowed to keep one fish, if they caught it, but all children took home a fish of either the scaled or chocolate variety. Spot prizes and a sausage sizzle were part of the recreation, which was supported by AWS Legal, Fresh Choice, ABL, The Warehouse and Fish and Game.
