Lake Wanaka has a full-time waterways patrol officer for the first time. Professional skipper Craig Blake, of Wanaka, has been a contractor during the previous three years, called on to work when required.
However, this summer he has been employed full-time by the Queenstown Lakes District Council as deputy harbourmaster for a six-month stint, until the end of April.
Mr Blake said the appointment was made because Lake Wanaka was becoming so busy. Asked about the worst offence he had encountered this summer, Mr Blake produced a photo (below) sent to him on Thursday showing a jet ski allegedly travelling at speed close to the shore.
The speed limit within 200m of the shore is 5 knots, or 9kmh
