A police spokesman said its investigation of the incident was continuing, as well as the formal identification of the victim.
Emergency services were called to the scene by the Kawarau Gorge Bridge and AJ Hackett Bungy Centre, between Queenstown and Cromwell, about 10pm.
The victim was dead when they arrived.
Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or who saw a man walking on the highway wearing black pants and a black shirt before that time.
