Games gear available to skifields

More than $140,000 is being invested in equipment and infrastructure by the directors of the proposed New Zealand Winter Games next year.

The equipment, which includes safety netting for downhill alpine ski races, will be available for use at future events held at skifields across the region.

The Super G, being held at Coronet Peak, requires more than 3.2km of safety netting, which is custom-made and imported from France.

Winter Games chief executive officer Arthur Klap said the decision was made to buy the equipment on behalf of the region so it could be made available for any of the skifields to use in future.

"Having this kind of infrastructure readily available makes hosting more large international alpine events even more feasible for the region," he said.

Local businesses also stood to benefit from the large-scale Winter Olympics-type event, Mr Klap said.

Preference would be given to them if they could offer price-competitive figures.
