Christchurch band Oval Office was hit hard, professionally and personally, by the earthquake on February 22, but it brings the good times back to Dux de Lux in aid of the Red Cross earthquake appeal.

Frontwoman Sacha Vee, of Wellington, told the Queenstown Times the seven-piece was booked in play in the Christchurch Dux de Lux but, when disaster struck, the Queenstown Dux invited the group to play in aid of relief efforts.

"We were super-keen and this will probably be our fourth time in Queenstown, so hopefully the community should know us down there," Vee said.

The band plays original "pure funk madness" from its 2009 self-titled debut album and will play fresh material from its upcoming second LP, as well as old-school funk and soul covers.

"We've more of an idea of where we're headed and all become quite used to writing with each other and what we all want to bring to the band. It's a big sound, jam-packed with great horn lines and harmonies - really awesome grooves."

Oval Office's ties to Christchurch were strong, with all members originally from the city and five members doubling as tutors in the CPIT Jazz School.

"It's a really big deal for us, other than the fact some of us lost some family members and it's our beautiful home city that has just crumbled.

"But we're also looking at the positive side of things and realising this is such a great opportunity for Christchurch to rise and be the newest city in New Zealand.

"It starts with the community and giving the community a good time."

Oval Office, Dux de Lux, tomorrow, 10pm. Donations on the door for the New Zealand Red Cross Earthquake Appeal.
