Hundreds at ceremony of farewell for GP

Several hundred family members, friends, colleagues and patients farewelled long-serving Queenstown GP Dr Pat Farry in a ceremony at his home yesterday.

Dr Farry (65), who was awarded an MNZM for services to rural medicine this year, died suddenly last week while working as a locum in Twizel.

Yesterday his wife, Sue Farry, welcomed mourners to "Punatapu", the couple's Glenorchy Rd home.

Georgia Farry, Dr Farry's eldest granddaughter, said she was never bored with her grandfather, who built an "amazing" tree house for her and her cousins.

Dr Don Simmers described Dr Farry as a fine diagnostician, educator, innovator, politician and rural general practitioner.

Dr Farry's sons, Ben, Simon, and Jude, also gave a moving eulogy to their father.

An obituary will be published in the Otago Daily Times tomorrow.
