Inquest into poplar death

The circumstances leading to the death of Queenstown farmer Russell Albert Liggett last year will be examined by Coroner David Crerar in Queenstown this week.

Mr Liggett (57) was killed when a poplar tree on Lower Shotover Rd fell during high winds and crushed the cab of his ute on September 14 last year.

The inquest is scheduled for Wednesday, along with the inquest into the death of Riversdale policeman Jacob Schriek (55), a former Commonwealth Games cyclist, who collapsed and died during the Motatapu Icebreaker mountain bike event last March.

It was reported Senior Constable Schriek suffered a heart attack during the event, which runs from Glendhu Bay to Arrowtown, and despite medical assistance he died at the scene.

On Thursday, Mr Crerar will hold an inquest into the death of Matthew Byron Allison (26), who was found dead in thick scrub at the base of Chinaman's Bluff, in the Dart River Valley 50km northwest of Queenstown on November 7 last year.

The final inquest scheduled for Thursday is for Auckland woman Irina Yun (36), who went missing in the Mt Aspiring National Park in December 2008.

Ms Yun, an immigrant from Kazakhstan, disappeared in a storm on December 31, while tramping the Cascade Saddle.
